HIGH TEMPERATURE WHEEL BEARING GREASE TESTER

- This test method covers a laboratory procedure for evaluating the high-temperature life performance of wheel bearing greases when tested under prescribed conditions.
- The test grease is distributed in the bearings of a modified, automobile front wheel hub-spindle-bearings assembly. While the bearings are thrust-loaded to 111 N, the hub is rotated at 1000rpm and the spindle temperature maintained at 160°C for 20 h, 4 h off operating cycle. The test is terminated when grease deterioration causes the drive motor torque to exceed a calculated motor cut off valve. Grease life is expressed as the accumulated on cycle hours.
- Consists of a modified front wheel hub-spindle-bearings assembly housed in a constant temperature oven and coupled to a variable speed drive motor. Control test functions automatically and provides continuous digital display of motor torque, rpm, chamber temperature, spindle temperature, time cycle and elapsed time. Spindle drive motor with 1725 rpm speed control for the hub.
- Automatically terminates test and displays elapsed oncycle hours when grease deterioration causes drive motor torque to increase to the calibrated end point. A build-in 30 second time delay circuit prevents erroneous test terminations due to momentary surges in motor torque at the beginning of the on-cycle. Insulated constant temperature oven is equipped with a 1800 watts heater and air circulation fan for efficient heat distribution.
- Digitally control oven to maintain spindle temperature at 160° C, +1.50°C. Sliding access doors and a movable platform that swings the drive motor out of the way provide easy access to the spindle assembly. Modified steel spindle and hub assembly conforms to above test method and is fitted with thermo couple, bearing thrust loading device and anodized aluminum grease collector.
